Purple Rain Fairy
I was planning on making a fairy doll standing straight with a long skirt in polymer clay. Because the legs and feet will be invisible , I don’t need to sculpt them so I will create the lower body with skirt out of one lump of clay (1 part lower body )
Its maybe a lazy way of working but lots of artists work that way , making no legs but a cone shaped lowerbody . They create an easy and stable base for a doll , just introducing a long stick in the upperbody as long as the legs in its entire length and then they add clay in the shape of a long skirt .
It gives a good result , but what happens is that the lower body lump end ups very straight looking very unnatural and very static …and I don’t like that !! So, I tried to find a way to create that lower part of a doll still out of 1 piece but with a more natural look , with a bit more “movement” …Im not that lazy after all hihih
I started making the upper body and head in fimo clay and cured it . Then I made the lower part this way :
1 . introduce a toothpick (or something thicker and bigger if needed ) in the upper body but only as long as the upper legs should be !!
2. Take 2 toothpicks (or something thicker and bigger if needed ) being the same size and create a V shape keeping the sticks together at one end with masking tape . The length of this V shaped part should be as long as the lower legs and feet .
3 . Now create a full leg part by joining the upper part and lower part together with wire and keep the wire fixed with masking tape . Doing so you create a flexible knee area .
4. now you get a leg shaped armature strong enough but flexible too !!!
5 . now when positioning your armature on a flat base , you can give your figure a more natural standing position . Then fix that position by covering the armature and feet area with epoxy clay and after it dried then you can build up the rest of the lower body with polymer clay or keep working with epoxy.
Now you can start making the dress ... I just draped a piece of polymer clay over the legs , and working it farther up the body to create a dress ...
I added curled fimo hair . During the last cure the figure collapsed and ended up leaning to the back so I fixzed her on the (glass) base adding some extra epoxy clay on the back side of the dress ...
painting the eyes and adding wings ....
Now just adding some extra glitter and green moss and flower on the base ....
